Story ... Nägeli Swiss AG is a family-run SME with around 25 employees and, as a supplier, manufactures customer-specific components with increased requirements in terms of material and precision. The company was founded in 1941 by Ernst Nägeli in Arbon as a stamping shop and quickly established itself as an international sales market for ball bearing cages and screw locks (tooth lock washers and spring washers). Laser cutting, also called laser beam cutting, is divided into fusion cutting, flame cutting and sublimation cutting. These are thermal separation methods for processing plate-shaped and three-dimensional objects by using a laser. The most widespread is flame cutting, followed by fusion cutting. In the course of this thermal process, contours are cut out of a piece of sheet metal (e.g. structural steel) using a laser beam. The cutting of the material is contact-free which makes this method so special. The light waves of the laser beam get absorbed and converted into heat. The sheet heats up, melts and vaporizes or burns. The laser beam is CNC-controlled and separates the material along a kerf. Metal sheets made of structural steel, stainless steel or aluminum are the most commonly processed. The thickness of the material depends on the power of the laser. At present, 40 mm of structural steel, 50 mm of stainless steel and 25 mm of aluminum can be processed with a fibre laser. The maximum laser power of a conventional laser cutting machine made by Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic or another manufacturer is currently 8 KW.
