Blow moulds

The blow molding is a process for producing hollow bodies from thermoplastics. In this case, a preform is subjected to internal pressure and thereby pressed against the contours of a blowing tool, whereby it assumes the desired shape.
The blow molding is one of the special methods of injection molding and has gained great importance in the production of bottles, containers and other plastic hollow bodies in the plastics processing industry. The method is distinguished in particular by the fact that the manufactured parts have comparatively small wall thicknesses. As a result, the material expenditure is low and the costs are kept low.

Technical basics for blow molding

In the case of blow moulds for the production of hollow bodies, a distinction is made essentially between the process variants Extrusion blow moulds and Streck blowers.

The basic procedure is the same in both variants: a preform produced in a preceding method is subjected to internal pressure in a molding tool by a blowing device. The pressure ensures an expansion of the blank in the cavity, as a result of which it is pressed against the contour of the two tool halves and assumes their shape. When the molding has reached the desired molding strength, the mold halves are removed and the hollow plastic body is finished.

The two process variants of extrusion blow molding and stretch blow molding differ substantially with respect to the production of the preform. Differences also occur with respect to the process parameters, which are explained below.

Extrusion blowing

The extrusion blowing is the predominantly used process for the production of hollow plastic bodies. It is distinguished in that the continuous Extrusion of the preform and the cyclical takeover and shaping of the preform take place in two parallel processes. The method can be described in six steps:

  • Production of the preform by continuous extrusion in an extruder
  • Positioning of the preform in the mold halves Precise separation of the preform at the extruder using a cutting unit
  • Positioning of the blowing nozzle at the opening of the preform
  • Pressure application, shaping and cooling of the hollow plastic body
  • Removal of the tool and removal of the hollow body

Stretch blowing

The stretch blowing differs from the extrusion blow molding essentially in that the preform is produced separately within the scope of an upstream process. The conventional injection molding or the blow molding can optionally be used. Due to the separate production process of the preform, the preform must first be heated for stretch blowing. The process steps at a glance:

  • Heat the preform using an infrared heating element
  • Insert the preform into the tool
  • Close the two tool halves
  • Application of the preform with internal pressure
  • Simultaneous stretching in circumferential and longitudinal directions
  • Cooling of plastic hollow body

Blow moulds Functionality: stretch blow molding

In comparison to extrusion blow molding, the preform is stretched both in the circumferential and in the longitudinal direction during stretch blow molding. For this purpose, a mechanical stamp is required which extends the preform in the longitudinal direction. Since the stretch blowing takes place at comparatively low temperatures, high pressures are required for stretching the preform.

Which products can be produced by blow molding?

Because of its comparatively low cost, the blow molding is ideal for the production of hollow plastic bodies which serve as packaging articles. The typical products of the process include:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Canisters
  • barrels
  • Suitcase half shells
  • Ventilation channels
  • Compensation tank
  • washing water tank

In addition, further hollow body shapes can also be produced by the process. In principle, all thermoplastics can be blow-molded, with PE-HD, PP, PE-LD and PVC being among the most widely used materials

What are the advantages of blow molding?

The blow molding is distinguished in particular by the fact that very thin wall thicknesses can be realized in comparison with alternative methods. In addition, the method is considered environmentally friendly, safe and cost-effective. In the plastics-processing industry, the blow molding is used for hollow bodies with high technical requirements, for example the pressure and temperature resistance and the precision.
