Turning

The turning is one of the most important cutting methods Production method and is used to manufacture cylindrical components. A single-edged tool (e.g. a rotary chisel made of high-speed steel) is guided to a rotating component in order to remove successive chips and to achieve the desired geometric shape.

How does turning work?

The rotation, as well as milling, is part of the separating production methods of metal machining and serves predominantly to treat rotationally symmetrical workpieces such as axes, shafts and flanges. CNC machine tools are often used to automate the process using a program and reduce manufacturing costs.

When rotating, a rotating shaft is machined by means of a rotating chisel in such a way that the desired surface properties result in a specific diameter. During rotation, the tool is moved along the rotating shaft by feed and thereby lifts chips of a defined thickness from the workpiece.

Depending on the direction of the feed movement, the rotation in the two methods can be divided into longitudinal and planar rotation. While, as a rule, a cylindrical workpiece is rotated during longitudinal rotation, the flat rotation of the end machining serves.

Turning in metal processing

In industrial metal processing, turning is indispensable as a manufacturing process with high machining speeds and high precision. The turning is used especially in the production of shafts with high demands on the surface properties. Typical products are cylindrical components such as rotary bushings or CNC turning parts with high demands on the shape accuracy. Depending on the desired result, the rotation can be carried out, inter alia, as thread turning, eccentric turning or unround turning.

When rotating, a rotating shaft is machined with the aid of a rotating chisel in such a way that the desired surface properties, such as a certain diameter, result. During rotation, the tool is moved along the rotating shaft by feed and thereby lifts chips of a defined thickness from the workpiece.

Materials when turning

In principle, any chipable material is suitable for machining by turning. The turning of wood is referred to as swirl and is considered separately from the turning in metal processing. Depending on the rotating process, iron materials such as steel and cast iron as well as non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, titanium, stomach and copper are suitable. Plastic is also suitable for rotating, but the thermal and mechanical-technological properties of the temperature and the processing speed must be taken into account here.
