Trowalizing
The trolling is also referred to as sliding grinding or sliding cutting and is a separating method of surface machining. In this case, metal workpieces together with a grinding means are usually introduced into a rotating drum in order to remove material in a targeted manner.
Trowalization is described in the DIN 8589 standard, together with the lapping and polishing, and is referred to as sliding panels. The process is very popular in the metal processing industry, as it can perform several tasks from Deburring and rounding over smoothing and polishing to matting and grinding. The desired result of the surface treatment can be brought about in a targeted manner by the variation of the machines and grinding means used.
Technical Basics About Trowalizing
In contrast to conventional grinding methods such as precision grinding, the workpieces are not individually machined during trolling, but are placed together with grinding elements—the so-called chips—in a robust container. This container is placed in a rotating or oscillating movement during the processing process.

As a result of the movement of the container, the chips slide repeatedly along the workpieces to be processed in recurring patterns and thereby lead to material removal. This usually takes place mainly at the edges of the workpieces and frequently serves the purpose of deburring them. The type of material removal can be largely varied by adding an aqueous solution, the so-called compound, in order to achieve the desired result.
Depending on the relative movement generated, a distinction is made between the following method variants during the trowalization:
- Drum slide grinding
- Vibration sliding grinding
- Diving gliders
- drag loops
- centrifugal gliders
- Pressure flow control

Term clarification: Trowalisierung
The term trowalization goes back to Walther Trowal. Walther Trowal was the first company to use sliding grinding in a drum industrially. Therefore, it was also called “mmel-ther” by way of language, which established the concept of trolling in the industry. The term "trolling" was published on 6. December 1951 registered as a word mark at the German Patent and Trademark Office.
What is the role of tumbling?
Trorolling is used not only for deburring and rounding off edges, but can also be used for optical purposes, depending on the movement of the container, the nature of the bulk material and the type of compound. Overview of the most important applications of trowalization:
- Deburring of workpieces
- grinding of workpieces
- Rounding edges
- Polishing glossy surfaces
- Creating matt surfaces
- Removal of dirt particles, fats and oils
- Descaling or removal of workpieces
- Compression

Which machines and additives are needed for tumbling?
The container must be designed during tro-rolling in such a way that it withstands the high loads of the rotating and oscillating movements. For this reason it is usually made of robust steel and is lined with polyurethane or a comparable material for noise protection reasons on the inside. In addition, the container must also be designed such that it withstands the loads of the liquid used.
The additive – the compound – essentially serves to receive and remove the resulting chip removal. In addition, the liquid can be modified by specific additions in such a way that it fulfills further tasks. Thus, the additive can contain additional substances for corrosion protection or for degreasing or can be provided with release agents for preventing adhesion in flat workpieces.

What is the quality of the abrasives?
The shape and size of the bulk material used depend substantially on the technical and optical result to be achieved by the method. The diameter of the chips can be from one millimeter to eight centimeters and determines the intensity of the grinding process as well as the grinding image on the workpiece surface.
In order to determine the degree of material removal, the abrasive can be varied in its composition. Typically, ceramics or synthetic resin serve as the basic material for the chips. A certain amount of minerals is added to this basic material. The higher the content of minerals in the chips, the finer the surface of the workpieces is processed. Alternatively, abrasives of steel or plastic are also used.
